  • Overview

    We are the largest private sector operator of multiple modes of passenger transit in North America, providing bus, rail, paratransit, shuttle, sedan and taxi services. We manage over 200 transportation contracts for cities, transit authorities and airports, providing safe and sustainable mobility solutions. Our mission is to improve public transportation, to enhance quality of life and combat global warming. The Operations Manager is responsible for managing daily activities of all operators and coordinates the activities of supervisors and dispatch personnel. Oversees scheduling of operators; monitors operations and coordinates delivery of service with superiors. The Operations Manager will also work closely with the maintenance department to ensure that all operation requirements are met. The facility includes over 200 drivers and supervisors.

     

    The Operations Manager (Fixed Route) reports directly to the General Manager in managing daily operations to include but not limited to; route supervision, staff and operator supervision, effective communication with internal and external customers and coaching employees for optimal performance, managing the entire operation in the absence of the General Manager, complying with all Company policies and managing the operation within the budgetary plan for the location.

    Responsibilities

    • Supervises daily activities of all operators and coordinates the activities of supervisors and dispatch personnel.
    • Oversees scheduling of operators; monitors operations and coordinates delivery of service with superiors.
    • Daily, weekly and monthly review of key operational metrics.
    • Track, compile and analyze performance; handle interdepartmental issues; resolve employee issues and grievances; improve processes and route scheduling.
    • Makes hiring decisions for authorized roles; evaluates the work performance of staff; ensures the timely and efficient completion of all assigned tasks.
    • Assists in accident/incident investigation, including any needed on-site assistance and support to safety and training personnel.
    • Coordinates with the safety and training department to ensure all safety goals and directives are met.
    • Assists in the development of the Operations department budget.
    • May operate a vehicle in revenue service, if necessary.
    • Maintains confidentiality of all information.
    • Assist with conducting periodic departmental audits.
    • Effectively manage on-time performance and driver availability.
    • Identify, select, train and mentor location staff.
    • Works closely with the maintenance department to ensure that all operation requirements are met.
    • May operate a vehicle in revenue service, if necessary.

    Qualifications

    EDUCATION, LICENSING, AND CERTIFICATIONS:

    • High school diploma or equivalent, such as GED, required.
    • Must be able to maintain a CDL.

    EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

    • Minimum 4-7 years' operations experience in a transit environment.

    SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:

    • Thorough knowledge of basic provincial laws, ordinances and regulations underlying the transit operation
    • Thorough knowledge of the methods of operation of the transit system’s staff and operational departments
    • Working knowledge and proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel and relevant database programs
    • Ability to organize and perform work efficiently; strong attention to details
    • Ability to work effectively with labor; may include labor grievances and negotiations
    • Must be willing to work flexible hours to include weekends and holidays
    • Must be able to work independently and have strong written and verbal skills.
    • High degree of multi-tasking skills.
    • Computer and financial skills required.


    Travel requirement (as a percent): <5% travel for occasional meetings

    PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS:

    • Must submit to drug testing and a criminal background check

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

    • Must be able to work shifts or flexible work schedules as needed.
    • Regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to manipulate, handle or feel; reach with hands or arms; and talk or hear.
    • Frequently required to sit. Occasionally required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel crouch or crawl; and smell. Occasionally required to lift up to 25 pounds.
    • Up to 30% of the workday is spent outdoors monitoring service on routes, transit facilities, and company locations.
    • Must be able to work in extreme heat and cold and in a damp environment with moderate noise.
    • Remaining work is accomplished in an office or in a cubicle space equipped with a telephone and computer; time is spent sitting, typing, or looking at a computer.
