    The Railroad Flagger provides protection for the work activities of other parties engaged in work on the railroad right-of-way by performing safety briefings and issuing appropriate instructions. Issues audible warnings to workers concerning the approach of trains.


    • Performs safety briefings and issues instructions to protect individuals who are engaged in work on the railroad right-of-way
    • Coordinates activities with the Train Operations center
    • Communicates by radio with train operators to authorize train movement through work area
    • Observes railroad tracks for approaching trains, issuing audible warnings to workers concerning the approach of trains, directing the discontinuance of specific work practices until after train(s) have passed work location
    • Observes the workplace for unsafe conditions; corrections condition or brings the issue to site supervisors
    • Installs and removing temporary signs for the control of train movements
    • Other duties as required.


    Education, Licensing, and Certifications:

    • High school diploma or equivalent, such as GED, preferred.
    • Must possess a driver’s license with a good driving record (no more than three moving violations an no DUIs within the last three years).
    • Must be qualified on examinations for Title 49 Code of Federal Regulation, CFR Part 213.7 of FTSS, General Code of Operating Rules, GCOR, and Roadway Worker Protection, Engineer in Charge (RWPEIC) related to these regulations within three weeks of Start Date.



    • At least one year of experience as a Track Flagger or Track Repair Leader


    Skills and Knowledge Required:

    • Knowledge of Federal Track Safety Standards (FTSS) and Federal Railroad Workers Safety (FRWS)
    • Demonstrable ability to communicate in written and spoken English with prior record keeping experience.
    • Ability to read, interpret and apply documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.
    • Ability to safely and efficiently operate railroad maintenance hand and power tools and railroad maintenance equipment
    • Ability to read routine reports, forms, and other documentation or correspondence
    • Ability to organize and perform work efficiently; strong attention to details

    Travel requirement (as a percent): 100% in the field


    Pre-Employment Requirements:

    • Must submit to drug testing and a background check
    • Must maintain a DOT medical card

    Physical Requirements:

    • Must be able to work shifts or flexible work schedules as needed.
    • Must be able to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
    • Must be able to work in the safety critical environments associated with operation of a rail system.
    • Must be able to stand and walk on uneven surfaces while working.
    • Must be able to lift and carry 50 lbs frequently.
    • Must be able to work in all weather conditions. May be exposed to water, fumes, and chemicals.
    • Must have the ability to distinguish colors and to hear warning signals and radio and telephone devices.
